Uniden has released a portable projector, the Uniden ULP 1000. I should really say an Ultra portable projector as this little unit is about the size of your average mobile phone or PDA, and easily fits in your top pocket, or purse for the ladies. The biggest difference between the Uniden ULP 1000 and a standard projector is that the ULP 1000 uses a laser rather than the traditional lamp. The use of a laser means the image is always in focus regardless of distance or angle, however the best throw range seems to be around the 2m mark. This does mean that the ULP 1000 is not really that suitable for presentations to larger audiences and it\'s 10 lumen brightness limits it\'s use to darker rooms. Connectivity is acheived via a video dock to a PC or laptops VGA connector, or the ULP 1000 can be connected to any device that has a component video connector as well as to iPod devices. This makes it ideal for sharing photo\'s or content from most mobile phones or PDA\'s. The battery lasts about 90 minutes which is pushing it if you are wanting to watch a movie, but is more than enough for most presentations. If longer viewing time is required it can be powered via USB or a power adapter. The performance of the Uniden ULP 1000 is very respectable and I watched a couple of DVD\'s with friends using my laptop. The image quality is not as crisp or vibrant as a larger lamp based projector although it can do a 16:9 aspect ratio with a 848 x 480 resolution. There are no built-in speakers in this projector which is not surprising in a unit of this diminutive size. Uniden\'s ULP 1000 pico projector would be the ideal companion to a mobile phone, PDA or laptop for those that require the ability to be able to have a spontaneous presentation. Currently the biggest drawback of this unit is the 10 lumen brightness, however I can see this technology improving to the point where it would be incorporated into mobile devices or laptops.
