CiscoLinksys has caught onto this idea and recently released the NMH305/405 media Hubs.
The Nmh 305 has half a terabyte and the NMH 405 has 1 terabyte of storage space, lcd display and 6 in 1 card reader
The simplicity of setup is a welcome surprise. Put the disk into your p.c and follow the Step by step instructions.
When setup is completed you will have completed your own personal intranet site with an easy to use GUI
to manage your digital media.Once setup you have 500 gig (NMH305) worth of storage on the media hub.

This would store over 600 movies in AVI format.
The GUI interface is very easy to use and you can create personalized folders or upload your media
directly into the media hub.
All new items will be displayed in thumbnail format on the front page.
Movies music and pictures all have a separate category on the front page.
You can also let the media hub send a crawler onto you network or computer to look for all your media
files and then have them indexed on the hub.
Connecting other machines to your media hub is very simple all you need to remember is the URL you
choose during the installation. Now all the other machines on your network will have access to those
files when they type in that URL into there browser.
A quick tip set that URL as a favorite or start page for easier access.
In the GUI you can stream the uploaded content directly onto your machine.
The browser will still need to cache the file before it plays, big files might take a little while
to start, however you do have the option to download the file directly onto the machine you are using.
The back up feature is also useful. You can set and forget or you can press the backup button on the
media hub to do it manually.
A couple features I wished they included was the drop and drag ability directly into the web
GUI instead of the upload feature, also the device is not wireless so you need to put it near your existing hub.
Surprisingly there is no support for Matroska files (mkv, mka) which seems strange, but this could be fixed by an update.
Besides those minor points home networking has never been easier.
