The Logitech G13 is probably more renowned for it’s use with FPS or RTS games but how does it fare with an MMO? Having recently been spending time playing Rift
I decided to give the G13 a run and see how it performed.

Initially I liked the look of the G13 gameboard as it has a four way joystick and macro keys. The joystick looked great for replacing the WASD movement keys
moving this function to my thumb and bringing the ability bar buttons closer to my fingers. Whilst this did work it did have it’s challenges.
I’ve been playing MMO’s for some time and am used to my G19 keyboard, as such moving away from what was comfortable was more a mental challenge than physical.
I also found that left and right movement was faster and I spent time wiggling around rather than moving direct. These challenges made me have a look at other setups with the G13. Thankfully the ease of programming the macro keys makes changing setups quick and easy.
You can also store 3 macro profiles on the gamepad which are changed by quickly pressing the macro profile buttons.
The biggest breakthrough I had, and the one I should have tried first, was the default setup for the joystick.
Instead of move left and right the default is strafe left and right. The strafing function leads to less wiggling and better control,
the success with this was almost instant as I was now able to more quickly manipulate abilities in the heat of battle.
The G13 also has an integrated LCD screen. This screen performs similar functions to the screens on the other Logitech devices and it works especially well with voice chat programs such as Vent.
If you often find yourself not knowing who is talking then the screen with names on it can be very useful.
You can also map other functions to the screen including performance monitoring as well game specific information.
Thumbs up to Logitech for another great piece of gaming hardware. The functionality and flexibility of the gameboard lend well to FPS and RTS but can also perform in an MMO.
The ability to re-map all of the keys makes customising to anyone’s preference simple and quick.
The integrated screen and excellent support software utilities make this a must have for anyone in the market for a gameboard or an upgrade to a standard keyboard without macro functionality.
